The Story of The Naupaka Duo

Born and raised in Hawai'i, Honua Founder Kapua Browning grew up with many Hawaiian legends.  One of her favorites, is the story of a unique Hawaiian plant - The Naupaka.  There are a few species, but these special thing about this plant is that they only grow half blossoms. We have one species found on our beaches and coastlines- Naupaka Kahakai and one found upland or in the mountains- Naupaka Kuahiwi . They both have beautiful half flowers as if torn apart to grow separately but when picked and placed together they make one.

One version of the Naupaka flower legend tells the love story between Naupaka and Kaui, two star-crossed lovers.  Naupaka was the sister of the fire goddess Pele, and Kaui was a fisherman.  Pele became jealous of their affection and sought to kill the couple.  To escape Pele’s fury, Kaui bolted into the mountains while Naupaka fled into the sea. After they died, flowers began to grow near the seashore and in the mountains that were similar yet distinctive – the naupaka kahakai and the naupaka kuahiwi.

The couple’s love is symbolized by the similarity of the blossoms, which resemble two halves of an whole blossom, but sadly the two are forever destined to live apart.  BUT… It is said that the lovers can be reunited when the flower of the Naupaka Kuaihiwi and the Naupaka Kahakai are joined together after they have been picked.
