Astaxanthin or Vitamin C? Who wins the antioxidant race?

When it comes to antioxidants, there are so many options out there that it can be overwhelming to choose the right one for you. Two popular choices are Astaxanthin and Vitamin C, but which one is the ultimate winner in the antioxidant race?  Well, the answer is...it depends.

This post focuses more on topical benefits but there are internal benefits as well, which are briefly addressed.

The Power of Astaxanthin

Astaxanthin is a powerful antioxidant that is known for its ability to fight free radicals in the body. It is derived from microalgae and is what gives salmon and flamingos their pink hue. Astaxanthin is believed to be up to 6,000 times more potent than Vitamin C, making it a formidable opponent in the battle against oxidative stress.  Honua sources our rich astaxanthin from the island of Hawai'i.  We work with an incredible "ocean farm" that turns their algae into top quality nutritional supplements.  We are fans of those too!  We use astaxanthin in multiple products, but most notably our Hibiscus Beauty Booster.  You can also find it in Hawaiian Beauty Water and Liliko'i Flash Facial.  Kapua actually visits the marine algae beds frequently and you can see her in front of one in the picture above.

The Benefits of Vitamin C

Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is a well-known antioxidant that is essential for overall health. It plays a crucial role in collagen production, immune function, and skin health. While Vitamin C is not as potent as Astaxanthin, it is still a valuable antioxidant that can help protect the body and skin from damage caused by free radicals.

What exactly ARE free radicals?

Free radicals are unstable molecules that can damage cells and DNA if they build up.  They are created during normal cell metabolism but can build up and cause damage to other molecules, including DNA, lipids and proteins.  This damage can increase the risk of cancer and other diseases.  Antioxidants interact with and neutralize free radicals, preventing them from causing damage.

Which One Should You Choose?

Ultimately, the choice between Astaxanthin and Vitamin C depends on your individual needs and preferences. If you are looking for a powerful antioxidant that can help combat oxidative stress and support overall health, Astaxanthin is hard to beat. On the other hand, if you are focused on boosting your immune system and promoting skin health, Vitamin C is a great option for you.

It's important to note that both Astaxanthin and Vitamin C can be beneficial additions to your daily routine. You may even consider incorporating both antioxidants into your regimen to reap the unique benefits that each one has to offer.

Final Thoughts

Whether you choose Astaxanthin or Vitamin C, incorporating antioxidants into your daily routine is a great way to support your overall health and well-being. Remember to consult with a healthcare professional before adding any new supplements to your regimen, especially if you have any underlying health conditions or are pregnant or nursing.
