Aloha - A Way of Life

It’s easy to be overwhelmed by the effortless beauty of the āina (land) in Hawaii. Warm afternoons on a white sand beach lead to magical watercolor sunsets that light up the sky. The mountain ranges that extend tall towards the heavens are a distinct reminder of how the islands came to be, bursting from the ocean millions of years ago. And the sweet fragrance of plumeria and pikake flowers is outright intoxicating.

The allure of the islands is no secret, over 8 million people visit them every year in search of the perfect beach, wave, ridgeline hike, and Mai Tai. But for locals and generations of Hawaiians, connection to the island’s lush gifts is a lifestyle that dates back centuries.

Beyond the visual paradise and organic artistry of the island, there’s a vibrant culture, deeply rooted in the spirit of Aloha and a relationship and kuleana (or responsibility) to care for Honua (the Earth). Our goal at Honua is to embody these guiding values, and share with the world how special our Hawaiian culture is.

The Spirit of Aloha (or The True Meaning of Aloha)

The dictionary defines Aloha as a noun, used in greetings and farewells, and in expressing love, but the true definition goes beyond what you can find in a book. Aloha, like love, is a verb. It is an attitude, a mindset, and a way of life. Within these 5 letters holds all one needs to know on how to interact rightfully (pono) in the world and how to live in harmony with yourself and others. Break down the letters and you’ll find the deeper meaning.

A- AKAHAI: meaning kindness, to be expressed with tenderness

L- LOKAHI: meaning unity, to be expressed with harmony

O- ‘OLU‘OLU: meaning agreeable, to be expressed with pleasantness

H- HA‘AHA‘A: meaning humility, to be expressed with modesty

A- AHONUI: meaning patience, to be expressed with perseverance

From the beginning, sharing the spirit of Aloha has been Honua’s mission. It’s infused in everything we do, beginning with the picking and harvesting of plants all the way to creating and preparing our products. You will even find this message of Aloha on the inside of every product we make.  Aloha is a gift from the native Hawaiian people, and we believe it is the key to world peace, if truly lived and shared by all.
